Comments
Wet-loose point release that picked up snow and speed. Triggered on a warm slope with an interface.
We were dropping into the top of little superior and planned to ride the ridge down to the bottom. On my first ski cut at the top, the small amount of snow from the ski cut point released and gained size and speed very quickly. It ran 1600 ft and stopped at the apron.
I called Alta dispatch immediately then We took as a safe and fast descent and made sure to not cross previously ridden lanes and kept our eyes up. We found a safe spot to the skiers right of the slide path and both turned out beacons to search mode. We slowly rode along side the debris pile looking for a signal. We found no signal during our initial search. We continued to the bottom and at the road we looked for tracks in the area and all of them had entry and exits from previous party’s.
We didn’t see anyone walking along the ridge from Cardiff up to our drop in so we have confidence that we were the only party in the area. That said, we saw a solo rider who went up to superior south face. We were very concerned after what we just saw so we waited for him to descend with dispatch at the road.
We were too late today. Thankfully we were on our A game riding and following a protocol.
