Summary: High pressure continues its stranglehold over the intermountain West. See GFS weather model below. The central Wasatch has been at LOW avalanche danger since Friday, January 16th…and the most recent significant avalanches were way back on January 10th. Longer running sluffs in the weak surface snow become more commonplace. 1-3" of new snow on Wednesday night greatly improved the riding conditions. But we're …

Summary: We dropped to LOW avalanche danger on Friday, January 16th…and it was a veritable sea of green for the week. The only reported avalanche of significance during the week was on Friday with explosive control work in upper LCC. The most recent significant avalanches were way back on January 10th.

Summary: After a series of storms moved through the area, the clouds parted to reveal the best powder skiing weekend of the season. High pressure is now building, temperatures are warming, and weather models suggest it may be a while before we see significant precipitation again.
While the storm cycle produced minimal natural avalanche activity, a complex problem remains. …

Summary: A series of small storms give way to larger storm totals, and all of a sudden—winter is on! A wild amount of avalanches, close calls, and new snow(!) throughout the week. A series of storms start out wet and dense before giving way to the classic cold smoke we’ve all been waiting for. Unfortunately, multiple avalanche involvements and textbook close calls …

Summary: We were still reeling from the Grinch storm on Christmas Eve, which brought an inch of rain to nearly all elevations, with an inch of snow to show for it at higher elevations. Rain crusts caked the Wasatch, with lenses one to three inches thick. Not to be counted out, Santa finally arrived on a cold front Friday night..with storm totals of 6-12” of low density snow by early Sunday morning. The cold smoke sluffed easily on the …

Drew Hardesty
Whenever people ask me, Are you working right now? (I get asked this a lot), my answer is always the same: To the untrained eye, it may appear as if I’m not working.
But at the heart of the matter, I’m getting paid to pay attention. This, of course, is when everyone laughs. Week in Review: (December 19 - December 25, 2025)
We look back at the key events from the previous week. Click HERE for archived forecasts.
Summary: Atmospheric rivers stormed through the West, but generally stayed to the north of us. Over the week, we experienced record or near-record temperatures along with moderate to strong winds from the west, but at least we did pick up a few inches of very dense snow - derisively referred to as “graupel slush” - Friday into Saturday. The overall avalanche danger tilted between LOW and MODERATE with the primary concerns revolving …
